Cyclone Gezani Leaves 36 Dead in Madagascar
According to the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management, the cyclone caused extensive damage, impacting 257,222 homes, 11,890 pool houses, and 37,253 other structures. The number of people displaced by the storm reached 8,852.
Among the fatalities, 32 occurred in the city of Toamasina, while two deaths were reported in Ambatondrazaka, and one each in Anjozorobe and Brickaville.
“These statistics are received from the five regions and 18 districts most affected by Cyclone Gezani,” the disaster management agency stated, identifying the hardest-hit areas as Atsinanana, Analamanga, Analanjirofo, Alaotra Mangoro, and Itasy.
The agency further noted that 17,980 buildings were completely demolished, 490 schools lost their roofs entirely, and 48 accommodation centers sustained damage across the affected districts.
Authorities reported that international partners have extended assistance to Madagascar, which is still recovering from Cyclone Fytia just two weeks earlier, an event that claimed 12 lives.
